From Control to Concern: Arsenal’s Title Dream Faces Its Toughest Examination Yet
Arsenal’s hopes of ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title have taken a serious hit after they threw away a two-goal lead to draw against bottom-of-the-table Wolves.
For most of this season, the title race has been in Arsenal’s hands. But now, things have changed.
Manchester City are five points behind in second place. If City win all of their remaining 12 matches including their home game against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium they will win the league. Arsenal still have 11 games left and could stay in control if they beat City in April. However, recent dropped points have made the situation much more tense.
The Gunners have now drawn back-to-back matches against Brentford and Wolves, losing four important points. With three straight second-place finishes in recent seasons two of them behind City fans are starting to worry about history repeating itself.
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith admitted the word “bottle” (suggesting a lack of mental strength) will likely be mentioned in the coming days.
A Game That Slipped Away
Arsenal looked comfortable at first. Bukayo Saka scored in the fifth minute, and Piero Hincapie doubled the lead in the 56th minute with his first goal for the club.
Wolves, who had lost their previous nine meetings against Arsenal and are heading toward relegation, seemed beaten.
But Arsenal failed to control the game and finish it off.
Hugo Bueno gave Wolves hope with a stunning long-range goal. Then, deep into stoppage time, 19-year-old substitute Tom Edozie scored dramatically after a mix-up between Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and defender Gabriel. The ball went in off Riccardo Calafiori, sealing a late equaliser and shocking the league leaders.
Pressure Growing
Arsenal now face crucial London derbies against Tottenham and Chelsea, and there are signs they are starting to feel the pressure at a key stage of the season.
Manager Mikel Arteta did not hide his disappointment.
He admitted his team did not perform at the level needed to win and said they must accept criticism. He stressed that the response must come on the pitch in the next match.
“In the second half, we were nowhere near the standards required,” Arteta said. “At this level, you have to accept the hit and today we deserved it.”
Wolves manager Rob Edwards said his team knew Arsenal were under heavy pressure and used that to their advantage.
A Worrying Trend
Arsenal’s form in 2026 has not been strong. They have won only two of their last seven league games. Only Crystal Palace and West Ham have dropped more points from winning positions this year than Arsenal.
In fact, this was the first time in Premier League history that a team starting the day bottom of the table avoided defeat against the league leaders after trailing by two goals.
Alan Smith described the result as a “pivotal moment” in the title race.
He believes Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola’s experience, will now feel confident. “It’s not good enough for a team hoping to win the title,” he said. “It doesn’t look good in terms of handling the pressure.”
With the season entering its final stretch, Arsenal must now prove they have the mental strength to stay in the race or risk watching the title slip away once again.
