A family in Nyakach, Kisumu is mourning their 16-year-old son who was killed by a hippopotamus in Lake Victoria.
The incident happened at Sangoburu area in West Nyakach. The boy was herding cattle near the lake when tragedy struck.
Cries for help from the class eight pupil were heard from a distance as villagers dashed towards the shores of the lake.
“Some villagers heard the teenager’s cries for help but got to the scene a little too late,” a resident said.

A fisherman later found the boy’s body floating in the lake, with physical injuries he sustained during the attack.
Locals have called on the Kenya Wildlife Service to find a lasting solution to the perennial human-wildlife conflict.
The body of the pupil was taken to a nearby mortuary as burial plans get underway.
