Mercedes-Benz has given its compact luxury SUV a comprehensive transformation for 2026, introducing an all-new GLA that combines a more athletic design with greater interior space, advanced artificial intelligence, new electric powertrains and a choice of electrified combustion engines.

Unveiled on July 29, 2026, the new GLA represents one of the most important additions to Mercedes-Benz’s compact-car range. It is also part of the company’s wider push toward electrification and software-defined vehicles as the brand celebrates 140 years of automotive innovation.

Orders opened in Germany on July 30, with the GLA 200 electric starting at €40,840 before VAT. Prices and specifications can vary considerably between markets, so buyers should check their local Mercedes-Benz distributor for final pricing and equipment.

A completely new look

The 2026 GLA is recognisable as a Mercedes-Benz SUV, but almost every aspect of its proportions has been reconsidered.

Compared with the previous generation, the new GLA is 20 millimetres lower while gaining 61 millimetres in wheelbase. Mercedes-Benz has also widened the rear track and pushed the wheels closer to the corners of the body, giving the SUV a more planted and athletic appearance.

The design uses cleaner surfaces and fewer unnecessary lines, while muscular shoulders, a more upright front end and a flatter windscreen give the vehicle a sportier stance.

Wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches depending on the specification. Roof rails remain available for customers who want additional carrying capacity for luggage or recreational equipment.

The illuminated Mercedes grille

One of the most distinctive features is at the front.

The fully electric GLA introduces Mercedes-Benz’s new illuminated “iconic grille” to the compact segment. It consists of a chrome frame, a smoked-glass-effect panel and the Mercedes star.

The grille can contain 608 illuminated polycarbonate light points, while 158 micro-LEDs help create animated lighting sequences. Depending on local regulations and specification, the Mercedes star itself can also be illuminated.

The combustion-powered electrified versions receive a different interpretation: their grille uses 150 chrome-finished stars, while higher equipment grades can feature an illuminated grille surround.

The headlights continue the theme. LED High Performance headlights are standard, while optional MULTIBEAM LED units incorporate Mercedes’ star motif into the daytime-running lights.

At the rear, the taillights are connected visually by a horizontal band that emphasises the SUV’s width.

The colours

Mercedes-Benz has expanded the GLA’s colour choices, introducing new exterior finishes including Aquamint and Clear Blue Metallic.

The company has also introduced new interior colour choices, notably Ivory Beige and Beech Brown.

For customers seeking a darker, more dramatic appearance, the Night Edition combines the AMG Line and Night Package and is offered with Cosmos Black Magno, alongside high-gloss black exterior details and black 20-inch wheels.

However, the exact paint and upholstery combinations available depend on the market and individual equipment line. Buyers should therefore confirm the local colour catalogue before ordering.

Four ways to specify the GLA

For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is offering the GLA with four main equipment lines, giving customers considerably more scope to tailor the vehicle.

Style Line

The Style Line is the standard starting point.

It includes LED High Performance headlights with high-beam assist, 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior details and a multifunction sports steering wheel.

Inside, buyers get black fabric or black fabric/ARTICO man-made leather comfort seats, with black or Ivory Beige man-made leather available as options.

Progressive Line

The Progressive Line moves the GLA further into premium territory.

It brings an illuminated grille outline, larger wheel options up to 20 inches, a leather-trimmed multifunction sports steering wheel, heated comfort seats and four-way lumbar support.

The Night Package is also available with this line for the first time.

AMG Line

The AMG Line gives the GLA a more aggressive appearance.

It includes AMG-specific exterior treatment, 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels, an illuminated grille with darker Shadow Chrome treatment and a more athletic front and rear design.

Inside, the AMG Line features a sports steering wheel with a flattened rim, Nappa leather and shift paddles, along with carbon-look aluminium trim and stainless-steel AMG pedals.

An animated star-pattern light carpet welcomes occupants when the doors open.

AMG Line Plus

New for the GLA, the AMG Line Plus pushes the sporty theme further.

It adds a high-gloss black spoiler lip, black door-sill details, exclusive 20-inch wheels and a matching high-gloss black key.

Inside are sports seats with adjustable headrests, red contrast stitching and red seatbelts, while buyers can choose combinations including black/power red, black leather, black/energy green and Beech Brown.

Night Edition

For buyers who want the most dramatic appearance, Mercedes-Benz offers a Night Edition.

It combines the AMG Line with the Night Package and uses Cosmos Black Magno paint, high-gloss black exterior elements and 20-inch black ten-spoke aero wheels.

The cabin continues the dark theme with black details, illuminated door sills and sports seats combining crystal-white ARTICO material with black MICROCUT microfibre.

It is arguably the most visually aggressive version of the new GLA.

Inside the 2026 GLA

The cabin has perhaps undergone the biggest transformation.

Mercedes-Benz has replaced much of the previous interior design with a cleaner, more minimalist layout dominated by digital displays.

The centrepiece is the optional MBUX Superscreen, which stretches across the dashboard beneath a single glass panel.

It combines:

A 10.25-inch digital instrument display
A 14-inch central touchscreen
An optional 14-inch passenger display
The result is an interior that looks considerably more like Mercedes-Benz’s latest larger vehicles than the outgoing GLA

Artificial intelligence comes to the GLA

The 2026 GLA is also a major software story.

Mercedes-Benz equips the vehicle with its new MB.OS operating system and an MBUX Virtual Assistant powered by generative artificial intelligence.

Rather than relying entirely on fixed commands, the system is designed to make interaction with the vehicle more natural and personalised.

The GLA also introduces MBUX Surround Navigation, which combines navigation information with a 3D representation of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Cameras and sensors allow the system to display nearby cars, bicycles, motorcycles and pedestrians while also showing information about the vehicle itself.

It is designed to give the driver a better understanding of what the vehicle’s sensors and assistance systems are detecting.

A more spacious cabin

Despite becoming lower, the GLA actually becomes roomier inside.

Its wheelbase now measures 2,790 millimetres 61 millimetres more than before.

Front passengers gain 7 millimetres of additional legroom, while rear passengers gain as much as 38 millimetres.

Headroom also increases, by up to 23 millimetres at the front and 24 millimetres at the rear.

The standard panoramic roof further enhances the feeling of space and brings more light into the cabin.

A practical SUV

Mercedes-Benz has not sacrificed practicality in the pursuit of technology.

The boot provides up to 410 litres, an increase of 70 litres over the previous GLA.

Fold the rear seats and capacity rises to 1,400 litres.

The rear seats have a 40:20:40 split, allowing owners to carry passengers and longer objects at the same time.

The electric GLA adds another useful feature: a 107-litre front storage compartment, or frunk.

That makes the electric GLA considerably more versatile for everyday luggage, shopping and sports equipment.

Panoramic roof

The panoramic roof is designed not just to look impressive but to improve comfort.

It uses heat-insulating laminated safety glass with infrared-reflective and low-emissivity coatings.

The technology helps reduce heat entering the cabin during hot weather and limits heat loss during colder conditions.

Ambient lighting

Mercedes-Benz has made interior lighting another major part of the GLA experience.

The ambient lighting system offers 64 colours, ten colour schemes, 20 brightness levels and three lighting zones.

The lighting can coordinate with the vehicle’s displays and selected atmospheric graphics, allowing owners to create different moods inside the cabin.

The effect is particularly striking when combined with the Superscreen and panoramic roof.

The electric GLA

The biggest mechanical change is the arrival of a new generation of fully electric GLA models.

At launch, Mercedes-Benz has announced three electric versions:

GLA 200 electric
GLA 250+ electric
GLA 350 4MATIC electric
The GLA 200 electric produces 165 kW and uses a 58-kWh usable lithium-iron-phosphate battery.

The GLA 250+ electric produces 200 kW and uses an 85-kWh usable nickel-manganese-cobalt battery.

At the top of the initial range is the GLA 350 4MATIC electric, producing 260 kW and using the same 85-kWh usable NMC battery.

Range

Range will be one of the GLA’s biggest selling points.

Mercedes-Benz quotes a maximum WLTP range of up to 657 kilometres, although the precise range varies by model and configuration.

That figure is particularly important because it moves the GLA beyond being simply a city electric SUV and makes it considerably more suitable for longer-distance driving.

As always, actual range can vary according to driving style, speed, weather, temperature, terrain, wheel choice, air-conditioning use and other conditions

Fast charging

The electric GLA uses an 800-volt electrical architecture.

At a suitable high-power DC charging station, it can accept charging at up to 320 kW.

Mercedes-Benz says drivers can add up to 270 kilometres of WLTP range in approximately 10 minutes under the appropriate charging conditions.

AC charging is supported at up to 22 kW.

An optional DC converter allows the GLA to use 400-volt charging infrastructure as well.

For markets where charging infrastructure is still developing, that compatibility will be an important consideration.

Performance

The GLA 350 4MATIC electric is the performance leader among the launch models.

Its 260-kW output allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.

The 4MATIC system gives it all-wheel drive and makes it the more capable choice for drivers who regularly encounter poor weather, rougher roads or steep terrain.

Mercedes-Benz says 4MATIC versions can tow up to 2,000 kilograms braked when appropriately equipped.

Off-road technology

Although the GLA is primarily an urban SUV, Mercedes-Benz has not ignored customers who want to venture away from paved roads.

Available technology includes a TERRAIN driving mode and a “transparent bonnet” function.

The latter uses cameras and digital visualisation to give the driver a view of the area immediately ahead of the vehicle that would otherwise be hidden by the bonnet.

Combined with all-wheel drive, these systems are intended to make the GLA more confident on rough or unpaved surfaces.

What about petrol and hybrid versions?

Mercedes-Benz has not abandoned the combustion engine.

High-tech electrified combustion versions of the new GLA are scheduled to follow, with the first versions expected at the beginning of 2027.

They will use a newly developed 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine paired with a 48-volt electrical system.

The integrated electric motor can provide an additional 22 kW of boost and is incorporated into Mercedes-Benz’s new eight-speed electrified dual-clutch transmission, known as the 8F-eDCT.

The system is designed to allow the GLA to drive on electric power alone in suitable situations, coast without the combustion engine and recover energy through regenerative braking.

Customers will initially have front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options across two power outputs.

This makes the 2026/27 GLA unusual in its segment: buyers are not forced into a single type of powertrain. They can choose full electric or wait for a high-tech electrified combustion model.

Safety and driver assistance

The new GLA is packed with cameras and sensors designed to support its driver-assistance systems.

Mercedes-Benz says European-market vehicles are equipped with eight cameras, five radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

These systems support a broad range of safety and driving-assistance functions, although exact availability and functionality can depend on equipment, country and regulations.

This is an important distinction for buyers: not every feature shown in international launch material will necessarily be standard on a GLA sold in every market.

Audio and connectivity

For buyers who place a premium on entertainment, Mercedes-Benz offers a Burmester 3D surround sound system.

The system is integrated into the vehicle’s digital environment and works alongside the MBUX system.

The cabin also includes a wireless smartphone charging tray, while Mercedes-Benz’s digital services and connected features are available through its Mercedes me ecosystem, subject to the relevant subscription, equipment and country requirements.

Production

The new GLA is being produced at Mercedes-Benz’s Rastatt plant in Germany.

Series production began on September 17, 2026, with electric versions already in production and the 48-volt hybrid models scheduled to follow later in the year.

The factory has been adapted to build different powertrains on the same production line, allowing Mercedes-Benz to respond more flexibly to demand for electric and electrified combustion vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz says it invested a low three-digit-million-euro amount in the plant’s transformation.

What does the new GLA mean for buyers?

The 2026 GLA is more than a styling update.

Mercedes-Benz has effectively used the model to demonstrate where its compact SUVs are heading: more electric, more digital, more personalised and more connected.

For the buyer who wants an electric luxury SUV, the GLA 200 electric offers a relatively accessible entry point, while the GLA 250+ electric focuses on longer-range usability.

The GLA 350 4MATIC electric is aimed at customers who want substantially more performance and all-wheel-drive capability.

For those who are not ready to move completely away from petrol, the upcoming 48-volt hybrid models provide another route into the new generation.

When will it be available?

Mercedes-Benz opened orders for the new GLA in Germany on July 30, 2026, with the three electric versions scheduled for market launch in November.

The high-tech 48-volt combustion models are scheduled to arrive from the beginning of 2027.

Availability in other countries, including African markets, will depend on Mercedes-Benz’s local distribution plans, homologation and charging infrastructure.

Verdict

The new GLA is arguably one of the most comprehensive redesigns in the model’s history. It combines the familiar high seating position and compact dimensions of a premium urban SUV with technology that would previously have been associated with much larger Mercedes-Benz models.

Its biggest strengths are its electric range, fast 800-volt charging, spacious new cabin, advanced MBUX technology, extensive personalisation and choice of electric or electrified combustion powertrains.

The GLA 350 4MATIC electric is particularly impressive on paper, with 260 kW, all-wheel drive and a 0–100 km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

But the most important change may be philosophical: Mercedes-Benz is no longer treating electrification as a separate branch of the GLA family. Electric and electrified combustion versions are being designed as part of the same new generation, giving customers more choice while the industry moves toward lower-emission mobility.

For an owner, however, the practical improvements may matter just as much as the headline technology. There is more passenger space, a larger boot, a 107-litre frunk on electric models, a panoramic roof, better digital integration and a much wider range of interior and exterior personalisation.

In short, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLA is not simply a new compact SUV. It is a preview of what Mercedes-Benz believes the next generation of everyday luxury motoring should look like: smarter, cleaner, more connected and still unmistakably Mercedes-Benz.
