Chivayo Built a Life That Few Could Ignore
Wicknell Chivayo, popularly known as Sir Wicknell, became one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable businessmen through a combination of entrepreneurship, conspicuous wealth, philanthropy and relationships with influential figures.
His sudden death in a helicopter crash near Marondera on September 30, 2026, brought renewed attention to the extraordinary life he had built.

Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and three others were killed in the crash, according to Zimbabwean police, although initial reports gave a different death toll. Investigators are still examining the circumstances surrounding the accident.
At the time of his death, he was in his 40s and had become a familiar face across African social media.
His lifestyle was rarely hidden from the public.
Chivayo and His Extraordinary Wealth
One of the defining features of Chivayo’s public image was the way he displayed his wealth.
Luxury vehicles, designer clothing, expensive watches, private aircraft and large cash gifts regularly appeared on his social-media accounts.
He was particularly known for giving vehicles and money to people from different walks of life.

According to reports, his gifts included luxury cars for musicians, sports personalities, lawyers, religious leaders and other public figures.
The EastAfrican reported that estimates put the value of vehicles he had given away at more than US$10 million, although there is no independently audited public record of his total giving.
His generosity became part of his identity.
Rather than quietly making donations, he often announced them publicly, sometimes naming the recipient, the vehicle and the amount involved.
A Business Career Built Around Energy
Behind the flamboyant lifestyle was a business career centred largely on engineering, construction and energy.
Chivayo was the founder of Intratrek Zimbabwe, a company involved in major energy projects.
Its best-known project was the 100-megawatt Gwanda Solar Project, which was initially valued at about US$172 million.

The project became surrounded by lengthy disputes and legal proceedings, including fraud-related allegations that Chivayo denied. The criminal case eventually ended in acquittal.
His business career therefore attracted both admiration for his entrepreneurial rise and scrutiny over how major contracts and wealth were accumulated.
Those contrasting views remained part of his public story.
Chivayo’s Friendship With African Presidents
Perhaps one of the most striking aspects of Chivayo’s life was his proximity to African political leaders.
He regularly shared photographs and videos showing him with presidents and other influential figures.
Among those relationships was his highly visible friendship with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
He was also photographed with Kenya’s President William Ruto, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu, among other prominent African leaders.

His relationship with Ruto received particular attention in Kenya.

Chivayo shared images of meetings and social encounters with the Kenyan president, while Ruto publicly referred to him as a friend.

Chivayo himself described the relationship as being based on faith, respect and mentorship and denied using political connections to obtain government favours or contracts.
Chivayo and His Celebrity Circle
His friendships extended beyond politicians.
Chivayo developed relationships with musicians, entertainers, sports personalities and other celebrities across Africa.
Some of these friendships became particularly visible when he gifted luxury vehicles or large amounts of money to public figures.

His social-media pages became a window into this world, showing meetings, celebrations, expensive purchases and generous gestures.
For many followers, these posts created an image of a businessman who enjoyed sharing his success with people around him.
For others, the displays raised questions about the scale and source of his wealth.
That contrast followed him throughout his public life.
His Strong Relationships With Pastors
Religion also featured prominently in Chivayo’s public life.
He maintained relationships with pastors and other religious leaders and frequently presented his success as connected to his Christian faith.

Church leaders were among the recipients of his donations and vehicle gifts.
The Daily Nation reported that, shortly before his death, he reflected publicly on the powerful men of God whose homes he had visited and the relationships he had formed with influential people.

He attributed his journey not simply to luck but to what he described as the grace of God.
His relationship with religious figures was therefore an important part of the public personality he created.
Chivayo Turned Generosity Into a Public Identity
Giving became one of the strongest themes associated with Chivayo.
His donations ranged from vehicles and cash to support for families, religious figures and community initiatives.
In 2025 and 2026, he also announced large-scale support for Zimbabwe’s health and welfare sectors, including ambulances and fuel.

The EastAfrican reported that he pledged 20 ambulances and 200,000 litres of diesel for the country’s health sector, with 10 ambulances reportedly delivered by March 2026.
His approach to philanthropy was unusual because it was highly visible.
Every major gift could become a social-media story.
That made his generosity inseparable from his celebrity status.
A Life Surrounded by Questions and Admiration
The story of Chivayo was never simply about luxury.
His wealth and business dealings attracted scrutiny, while his relationships with political leaders created considerable public interest.

At the same time, supporters pointed to his charitable giving and the people he helped.
The competing views made him a complicated public figure.
Some admired his generosity and entrepreneurial success, while others questioned the relationship between wealth, government contracts and political access.
These differing perspectives remain part of the discussion surrounding his legacy.
Chivayo’s Final Days
In the days before his death, Chivayo was still publicly displaying the lifestyle that had made him famous.
On the day of the crash, reports said he had posted photographs of two luxury vehicles he intended to give to his lawyers, together with US$750,000 in cash.

His death therefore came at a moment when he remained highly active on social media and deeply connected to influential figures across Africa.
The helicopter crash brought that public chapter to an abrupt end.

Remembering a Remarkable and Controversial Life
Wicknell Chivayo left behind a story that stretched across business, politics, entertainment, religion and philanthropy.
He became known for a lifestyle of extraordinary luxury, but also for giving away some of the wealth he displayed.

His friendships reached presidents, celebrities, pastors and business figures, giving him a public profile that extended far beyond Zimbabwe.
His business career, meanwhile, was marked by major energy projects alongside controversy and legal scrutiny.
His sudden death at 43 has now turned attention from the lifestyle he documented so extensively to the legacy he leaves behind.
For those who knew him personally, Chivayo was a friend, businessman and philanthropist.

For the wider public, he became a symbol of an unusually visible form of African wealth β one built around business, influence, faith, friendship and extraordinary generosity.
His life may have been controversial at times, but it was certainly difficult to ignore.
