Kenya’s Malkia Strikers survived their first major scare of the 2026 Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship, recovering from a set down to defeat Algeria 3-1 and book a place in the semifinals.
The defending champions were forced to dig deep at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi on Tuesday night after Algeria stunned the home side by taking the opening set 25-21.
But Kenya responded with the authority of a team chasing a record-extending continental title, dominating the next three sets 25-7, 25-15 and 25-18 to complete a memorable comeback and keep their championship defence firmly on course.
The victory sets up a heavyweight semifinal against former champions Cameroon on Thursday, with a place in the African championship final at stake.
Algeria deliver an early warning
Kenya entered the quarter-final as one of the tournament’s strongest sides.
The Malkia Strikers had swept Mali, Zambia and Nigeria without dropping a set on their route to the knockout stages, including a convincing 3-0 victory over Nigeria in the round of 16.
Algeria, however, showed immediately that previous form counted for little once the quarter-final began.
The North Africans took advantage of Kenya’s slow start to claim the first set 25-21. It was the first time the defending champions had surrendered a set throughout the tournament, suddenly putting pressure on a Kenyan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd.
Rather than panic, Geoffrey Omondi’s charges responded emphatically.
Kenya turn the tide
The second set proved to be the turning point.
Kenya raced away to a remarkable 25-7 victory, completely changing the momentum of the contest and restoring belief among the home supporters.
The Malkia Strikers maintained that control in the third set, winning 25-15 to move within one set of the semifinals.
Algeria attempted to fight back in the fourth, but Kenya kept their composure and closed out the match 25-18, completing a 3-1 victory.
It was not the flawless performance Kenya had produced earlier in the competition, but the manner of the recovery could prove just as important as the result.
Championship campaigns are rarely decided by the matches that go according to plan. For the defending champions, surviving their first real examination has given them another opportunity to demonstrate their resilience.
Cameroon await in the semifinals
Kenya’s reward is a meeting with one of the continent’s traditional volleyball powers.
Cameroon secured their semifinal place with a straight-sets victory over Uganda, winning 25-18, 25-20 and 25-18.
The result means Kenya will face a Cameroonian side that has also demonstrated its strength in the tournament, setting up one of the most anticipated matches of the championship.
The fixture carries an added layer of history.
Kenya defeated Cameroon in the 2023 African championship final in Yaoundé to claim the continental crown. That triumph gave the Malkia Strikers their 10th African title and made the victory particularly significant because it came on Cameroonian soil.
Three years later, the two sides meet again with another final place on the line.
This time, Kenya have home advantage.
A chance to make history at home
The 2026 championship represents an important opportunity for the Malkia Strikers.
Kenya are the record winners of the African women’s volleyball championship, with 10 titles to their name, and entered the competition as defending champions. The tournament is being staged at home, increasing the expectation surrounding Omondi’s team.
The ultimate prize is therefore about more than defending the title.
A successful campaign would allow Kenya to extend their dominance of African women’s volleyball while becoming champions on home soil.
The tournament also carries an Olympic dimension. Before the quarter-finals, tournament coverage indicated that the eventual African champion would earn direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
That makes Thursday’s semifinal more than simply another chapter in the Kenya-Cameroon rivalry.
It is a gateway to both continental glory and a potentially transformative Olympic opportunity.
Egypt and Rwanda complete the final four
The other side of the semifinal draw has produced an equally intriguing contest.
Egypt booked their place in the last four by sweeping Tunisia 3-0, winning 25-20, 25-14 and 25-9.
Rwanda, meanwhile, continued their impressive campaign with a 3-1 victory over Ghana, prevailing 25-17, 24-26, 25-19 and 25-18.

For Kenya, however, the focus is firmly on Cameroon.
The defeat by Algeria in the opening set offered Kenya a reminder that their status as defending champions guarantees nothing.
But their response was perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the night.
They did not merely edge their way back into the contest. They dominated the second set, controlled the third and maintained enough composure to finish the job in the fourth.
Now comes a much bigger examination.
Cameroon will arrive with the memory of their 2023 final defeat, while Kenya will enter the semifinal knowing that the road to another African title runs through one of their fiercest continental rivals.
For the Malkia Strikers, the equation is simple: win on Thursday and they will be one victory away from another African crown.
After surviving Algeria, Kenya are still standing.
And with the Kasarani crowd behind them, the defending champions are now two sets away from another final — but first, they must get past Cameroon.
