Many matatus failed to resume operations, leaving commuters stranded at bus stops with long lines . That many to seek alternative transport or walk to work. Police officers have been confiscating registration plates of matatus blocking roads in Nairobi CBD.This has further exacerbate the situation.
The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) is protesting rising incidents of boda boda riders torching matatus and other vehicles. At least nine vehicles set ablaze in the past six months and no arrests made. Operators demand government intervention, improved security, and compensation for destroyed vehicles.
“This is a desperate cry for help. We’re not asking for much, just a safe working environment and protection for our drivers and passengers,” said a matatu operator.
The strike has caused widespread disruption, with commuters facing difficulties getting to work and school.
The strike’s suspension has brought relief to commuters, but the underlying issues remain unresolved. The Federation of Public Transport Sector has scheduled further consultations to address the concerns and seek a lasting solution
