A fourth-year Kirinyaga University student, Sospeter Onyango Osungo, widely known as Billionaire Evance Akoko or Sirikal’, tragically lost his life in a mob attack in Kibera, Nairobi, on Sunday night, November 17. The 23-year-old architecture student from Gem, Siaya County, was brutally killed in an altercation that spiraled out of control, leaving his family, friends, and the nation grappling with the shock of his untimely death.
The Fatal Night
Akoko, well-known for his flamboyant lifestyle, had traveled to Kibera in an Audi Q3 alongside two companions—a male and a female friend—for a night out. Witnesses recount that he initially stopped at a popular joint to treat an old friend, generously offering to buy drinks for everyone present. The group later decided to move to another venue hosting a live performance by a renowned Ohangla artist.
As they approached the club, an altercation erupted between Akoko’s group and a gang of bodaboda riders operating in the area. The situation reportedly escalated when Akoko allegedly claimed he could shoot the riders, enraging the group. The mob accused him of being a thief, and armed with pangas and knives, launched a violent attack.
Akoko suffered seven fatal stab and hack wounds, succumbing to his injuries on the spot. His two friends sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital, while their driver managed to escape and alert the police. Akoko’s body was taken to Chiromo Morgue for autopsy, and authorities have since initiated a manhunt for those involved in the attack. Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei condemned the mob action, emphasizing that mob justice is a criminal offense.
The Mystery of Akoko’s Lifestyle
Akoko’s social media presence, particularly on TikTok and Instagram, painted the picture of a young man living a lavish lifestyle. He frequently posted images of luxury cars, high-end nights out, and road trips, earning admiration and intrigue from his followers. However, the source of his wealth remains a mystery, fueling speculation about his income and activities beyond his studies.
His death has drawn parallels to another recent tragedy involving a Kirinyaga University student. Dennis Oduor Otieno, known as Denno Bright, died in October 2024 after collapsing in a Mombasa apartment following a night of heavy partying. Both students had gained attention for their sudden rise to wealth and luxurious lifestyles.
Investigations and Reflections
Police have recorded statements from witnesses, including Akoko’s friends and family, as investigations continue. His mother, devastated by her son’s violent death, is struggling to come to terms with the loss. Authorities are now focusing on tracking down the perpetrators of the attack and unraveling the circumstances that led to the fatal altercation.
Akoko’s death underscores deeper societal issues, including the dangers of mob justice, the allure and risks of unchecked pursuit of wealth, and the societal pressures young people face. His violent end serves as a sobering reminder of the need for justice and accountability in such tragic events.
