TikTok has banned over 60,000 accounts in Kenya and removed more than 360,000 videos for breaching its community guidelines, according to the platform’s latest transparency report. During the period under review, TikTok suspended 60,465 accounts, including 57,262 accounts that were suspected to belong to users under the age of 13, violating the app’s age restriction policy. Additionally, a total of 360,000 videos were removed for content violations, which represents 0.3% of the total videos uploaded to the platform in Kenya.
The platform revealed that 95% of the videos taken down were removed within 24 hours of being flagged, and 99.1% of these videos were proactively detected and removed before any user reports were submitted. The use of automated moderation technology has played a key role in these efforts, enabling TikTok to quickly identify and remove harmful or inappropriate content. According to the company, this proactive approach is a significant step in maintaining a safer online environment, with automated tools now removing 80% of the violative videos, compared to 62% the previous year.
Globally, TikTok removed an astonishing 178 million videos during the same period, with 144 million of these videos being deleted automatically by the platform’s moderation systems. The company continues to enhance its automated technology to ensure a faster and more consistent removal process. TikTok’s proactive detection rate has also significantly improved, reaching a new record of 98.2% of videos being removed before being reported by users.
This increased reliance on artificial intelligence for content moderation highlights the platform’s commitment to improving the safety and integrity of its user environment, particularly as it deals with a growing global user base and millions of daily uploads.
