A passenger has died aboard a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Lagos after becoming unresponsive shortly before the aircraft landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, prompting an investigation by Nigerian authorities.

Kenya Airways confirmed the death on Wednesday, October 7, following an incident on Tuesday night, October 6. According to the airline, the passenger became unresponsive at about 9:20 p.m. Nigerian time, approximately 20 minutes before the aircraft was due to land in Lagos.

The airline said its cabin crew immediately responded to the medical emergency, administering first aid and following established emergency procedures.

When the aircraft landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, medical personnel boarded the plane to attend to the passenger. After examining the passenger, the medical team confirmed that the individual had died. Kenya Airways said the aircraft arrived at approximately 9:41 p.m. Nigerian time.

Police take over investigation

The circumstances surrounding the death are now being examined by Nigerian authorities.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), told The PUNCH that he had been briefed by Kenya Airways’ country manager and that the police had taken over the matter.

Achimugu said the passenger had reportedly been picked up in Madagascar after Nigerian customs authorities had previously denied the individual entry into Nigeria. According to the account given to the NCAA, Kenya Airways was responsible for returning the passenger because it had transported the individual into the country.

He further alleged that the passenger became restless and aggressive during the flight, attempted to gain access to the cockpit and later tried to open a rear aircraft door. Achimugu said the passenger was subsequently restrained.

These claims have not been independently established, and the police investigation is expected to determine exactly what happened aboard the aircraft and what led to the passenger’s death.

The NCAA official also said an autopsy could potentially be requested by the deceased passenger’s family as the investigation progresses.

Kenya Airways expresses condolences

Kenya Airways said it was working with the passenger’s family, local authorities and aviation regulators following the incident.

The airline expressed its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and said it was committed to respecting the privacy and dignity of everyone involved.

The carrier also said it was providing the necessary support and facilitating the required processes following the death.

The incident occurred on the Nairobi-Lagos route, one of Kenya Airways’ regular international services. The airline currently lists daily return flights between Nairobi and Lagos on its website.

Flight-tracking data identifies the service as Kenya Airways flight KQ534, scheduled to operate from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Lagos. Tracking data records the October 6 service as having departed Nairobi at about 3:48 p.m. and landing in Lagos at about 8:34 p.m. UTC.

Questions remain unanswered

The death has raised questions about what happened during the final stage of the flight, particularly concerning the passenger’s condition and the events immediately before the aircraft landed.

At this stage, however, several details remain unconfirmed.

Kenya Airways has characterised the incident as a medical emergency and confirmed that the passenger was found unresponsive before landing. The NCAA, meanwhile, has said police are investigating the circumstances and has relayed additional claims about the passenger’s behaviour during the flight.

The cause of death has not been announced, and authorities have not yet released the passenger’s identity.

The investigation will therefore be important in establishing whether the passenger died from an underlying medical condition, an event connected to the reported disturbance, or another cause.

For now, what is confirmed is that a routine journey between Nairobi and Lagos ended in tragedy: a passenger became unresponsive shortly before landing, crew members responded, medical personnel met the aircraft after arrival, and the passenger was pronounced dead.

Kenya Airways has offered condolences to the family, while Nigerian authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.

The police investigation and any subsequent medical examination are expected to provide a clearer account of what happened aboard the aircraft.
