Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has strongly criticized former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua over remarks encouraging tourists and investors to stay away from Kenya, saying the statements undermine the country’s economy and global reputation.
Speaking during a press briefing at Harambee Annex in Nairobi, Mwaura defended Kenya as a safe, stable and attractive destination for both visitors and investors, insisting that the country’s tourism industry continues to record positive growth despite negative narratives.
His remarks came in response to comments made by Gachagua during a church service in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County, where he claimed that security concerns had made Kenya unsafe for tourists and investors.
Gachagua urged tourists to postpone their visits and advised investors to delay their investments until next year, arguing that the country was experiencing insecurity that could affect visitors and businesses.
In response, Mwaura said such statements risk damaging one of Kenya’s most important economic sectors by discouraging international travel and investment.
He noted that thousands of Kenyans rely on tourism for their livelihoods and warned that political leaders should avoid making remarks that could negatively affect businesses, jobs and investor confidence.
Mwaura emphasized that Kenya remains one of Africa’s leading tourism destinations, with security agencies continuing to safeguard both local and international visitors while supporting a favorable environment for economic growth.
The government spokesperson also addressed what he described as misleading portrayals of Kenya by some foreign personalities.
He referenced a viral video by American actress Skai Jackson, who suggested that mirrors are an expensive luxury in Kenya and claimed some children in rural communities had seen their own reflections for the first time through her mobile phone.
Mwaura dismissed the claims, describing Kenya as a modern nation with a well-educated population, expanding digital infrastructure and a resilient economy.
He praised Kenyans for defending the country’s image on social media and across international platforms, saying citizens have demonstrated strong national pride regardless of political differences.
The spokesperson further called on leaders to promote unity and responsible leadership, urging them to resolve political disagreements through dialogue instead of statements that could damage Kenya’s international standing.
Mwaura maintained that every region of the country continues to benefit from national development initiatives and encouraged Kenyans to work together in advancing economic growth, tourism and investment.
