Harmonize Speaks After BASATA Action
Tanzanian singer Harmonize has opened up about his reaction to the decision by the National Arts Council of Tanzania, BASATA, over his music video “Kudos.”
The Bongo Flava star said he was disappointed after the regulator took action against the video, although he added that he did not blame the authorities for their decision.

His comments came after BASATA ordered the removal of the video and imposed a TSh5 million fine on the musician.
The decision temporarily placed the release at the centre of a wider debate about artistic freedom, cultural standards and the regulations governing music in Tanzania.
The ‘Kudos’ Video Faces a Ban
BASATA announced its decision on September 23, saying the video did not comply with what it described as Tanzanian moral standards.
The council said the content was considered to undermine the dignity of viewers.
As part of its decision, the regulator ordered the removal of “Kudos” from Harmonize’s social-media platforms.

He was also required to pay a TSh5 million fine within 14 days.
The video’s director, Kennedy David Sanga, also faced disciplinary measures connected to the production.
Why Harmonize Says He Was Disappointed
Speaking about the controversy, Harmonize said he had not expected the action from BASATA.
He explained that he was trying to explore a different creative direction and reach audiences beyond Tanzania.

For the singer, the controversy was therefore unexpected.
He said he was disappointed by the decision but did not blame the regulator for taking action.
His response adds another perspective to the dispute, with the artist defending his creative intentions while acknowledging the authority of the country’s arts regulator.
Harmonize and the Push for International Audiences
The controversy surrounding “Kudos” comes at a time when Harmonize has continued pushing his music toward international audiences.

The singer has built a major following across East Africa and has increasingly positioned his music for audiences beyond Tanzania.
He has also continued releasing music and visuals as part of his wider artistic development.
His explanation suggests that experimentation remains an important part of that process.
However, artists working in Tanzania must also operate within regulations governing the production and distribution of creative works.
That has brought the question of where creative expression meets regulatory standards into sharper focus.
BASATA Sets Conditions for the Singer
Following its initial decision, BASATA required the musician to comply with the directives before resuming normal artistic activities.
The conditions included paying the fine and removing the video from his social-media platforms.
The regulator said the suspension would remain in place until the requirements were fulfilled.
The decision was not limited to the singer. The video’s director was also subjected to measures connected to the production.
The case demonstrated that BASATA can take action over content that it considers to breach the standards governing Tanzania’s creative sector.
Harmonize Complies With BASATA
The latest development has brought a new turn in the story.
According to BASATA, the singer appeared before the council on October 2 and fulfilled the conditions that had been imposed on him.
He was subsequently allowed to continue with his artistic activities.
However, the regulator placed him under one month of monitoring and warned that further action could be taken if he failed to comply with the applicable requirements.
That means the immediate suspension has effectively been lifted after the conditions were met.
‘Kudos’ Controversy Raises Questions About Music Regulation
The case has attracted attention beyond the artist himself because it highlights the relationship between musicians and Tanzania’s arts authorities.
Artists regularly use music videos to experiment with visuals, storytelling and different creative approaches.
At the same time, regulators have rules governing artistic content and its distribution.
The disagreement over “Kudos” therefore illustrates the challenges that can arise when an artist’s creative direction conflicts with the standards enforced by a regulator.
In this case, BASATA maintained that the video breached its rules, while the singer expressed disappointment with the decision.
Harmonize Moves Forward
With the conditions now fulfilled, Harmonize can continue with his music career while remaining under BASATA’s one-month monitoring period.
The episode has nevertheless become an important moment in the release of “Kudos.”
What began as a new music video developed into a regulatory dispute that resulted in a fine, a temporary suspension and the removal of the video from the singer’s social platforms.
For the artist, the experience appears to have been disappointing but not career-ending.
His comments also show that he remains focused on exploring new creative directions and connecting with audiences beyond Tanzania.
The “Kudos” controversy now enters a new phase as Harmonize resumes his artistic activities while complying with the conditions set by BASATA.
