AEK Athens 1–0 LASK: Razvan Marin’s spectacular free-kick gives Greek side three points in tight European opener
Not every Champions League match needs to be a thriller. AEK Athens proved that on Tuesday.
The Greek club began its campaign with a disciplined 1–0 victory over LASK, with Razvan Marin’s superb first-half free-kick providing the only goal of the evening.
The Romanian midfielder struck in the 21st minute, curling the ball from outside the penalty area into the top corner and beyond the reach of the LASK goalkeeper.
It was a moment of individual brilliance in a match otherwise decided by organisation, patience and defensive concentration.
One moment changes everything
AEK did not need a barrage of goals. They needed one perfect strike. Marin supplied it.
His free-kick came from the left side outside the penalty area. Rather than simply attempting to overpower the goalkeeper, he shaped the ball around the defensive wall and into the top corner. The goalkeeper could only watch.
AEK had the lead. And that goal ultimately proved enough.
LASK unable to find a response
The Austrian visitors attempted to respond, but AEK’s defensive structure remained intact. The longer the game remained 1–0, the more valuable Marin’s goal became. There was no second AEK goal to provide insurance.
There was no comfortable cushion. Every LASK attack therefore carried significance. But the Greek side refused to surrender their advantage. They defended the lead and saw out the match to begin their European campaign with maximum points.
A different kind of Champions League victory
While the night’s other fixtures produced five-goal thrillers and late drama, AEK’s victory was based on something simpler. Efficiency. One excellent set piece. A clean sheet. Three points.
For AEK, that is an excellent way to begin the league phase. For LASK, the frustration will come from knowing that one moment of brilliance separated the two sides. The result also illustrates one of the enduring truths of Champions League football.
Possession, chances and attacking ambition can all become irrelevant when one player produces a moment that nobody can stop. On Tuesday night in Athens, that player was Razvan Marin.
