Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has been released on bond after denying charges of obstructing traffic along Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
Omondi appeared before the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday, September 8, alongside seven co-accused persons. All eight pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawfully obstructing the operation of motor vehicles on a public road, contrary to Section 58(c) of the Kenya Roads Act
The prosecution alleges that the accused, together with others who have not been charged, obstructed traffic along Moi Avenue on September 7, interfering with the free flow of vehicles.
Omondi was arrested on Monday outside the Kenya National Archives while collecting signatures for his “Punguza Mzigo” campaign. The initiative seeks to gather one million signatures in support of proposed constitutional changes, including reducing Kenya’s 47 counties to eight regional units.

His lawyer, Danstan Omari, urged the court to release the accused on personal bond, arguing that Omondi’s arrest was connected to his political activism and constitutional reform campaign. The prosecution did not oppose their release but asked the court to impose reasonable bond terms.
Milimani Magistrate Caroline Nyaguthii released Omondi on a free personal bond, while the seven other accused were each granted a KSh2,000 personal bond. The case will be mentioned on September 29, 2026.
The latest case comes after Omondi faced a separate traffic-obstruction charge earlier this year, highlighting his repeated encounters with the law during public activism.
Omondi has continued with his constitutional reform campaign despite the arrest, while the court process over the Moi Avenue incident now moves to its next stage.
