Manchester City’s first Champions League match under Enzo Maresca was not a performance of overwhelming brilliance. It did not need to be.
City left the Estádio do Dragão with a 2–0 victory over Porto on Tuesday, thanks to two second-half goals from Erling Haaland and another disciplined European performance from a side learning to play under a new manager.
Haaland scored twice first shortly after halftime and then again in stoppage time to turn a stubborn match into a comfortable-looking scoreline.
The result extends City’s winning start under Maresca and gives the English club an ideal beginning to their European campaign. Reuters described Haaland’s double as the decisive factor in City’s victory
Porto make City work
The scoreline may suggest an easy night. The match was anything but. Porto defended aggressively and made it difficult for City to find the final pass. The Portuguese side survived City’s possession and forced goalkeeper Diogo Costa into several interventions.
One of City’s clearest first-half opportunities fell to Haaland, whose effort was saved by Costa before the goalkeeper also denied Rayan Cherki from the rebound. City had control, but Porto had resistance.
That was important because Maresca’s side were playing in one of Europe’s most intimidating away environments.
Haaland breaks the deadlock
The breakthrough arrived only two minutes into the second half. Rayan Cherki did brilliantly to keep the ball alive before finding Enzo Fernández. The Argentine midfielder then delivered a cross into the area.
Haaland attacked it. The Norwegian striker rose above the Porto defence and directed his header against the post and into the net. Porto had finally been beaten.
The goal also demonstrated the simplest weapon in City’s attacking arsenal: give Haaland the right delivery and allow him to turn it into a goal. The striker was named player of the match after the final whistle.
City refuse to panic
Porto attempted to respond, but City remained composed. They did not need to turn the game into a frantic attacking contest. Instead, they controlled the rhythm, moved the ball and waited for opportunities. Maresca’s substitutions also helped City maintain their grip on the contest.
Porto’s challenge became increasingly difficult because they needed a goal while also protecting themselves against City’s counterattacking threat. Eventually, the second goal arrived.
Deep into stoppage time, Haaland found the bottom corner to complete his brace. Two goals. Three points. Another clean sheet.
A promising beginning for Maresca
For Maresca, the victory represents more than simply three points. The Italian has inherited enormous expectations at Manchester City, and European away matches will provide some of his biggest tests.
Porto offered exactly that kind of examination. City were not at their most fluent, but they were patient, defensively disciplined and ruthless when opportunities appeared.
That is often what Champions League football demands. The title will not be won in September, but the early signs are encouraging. Maresca has begun his European journey with an away victory at one of the continent’s traditional clubs. And with Haaland already scoring twice, City have reminded everyone of the most obvious problem facing their Champions League opponents.
