Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the 2026–27 Premier League season with a narrow victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on September 5. Erling Haaland scored the only goal, but Coventry made City work until the final whistle.
Haaland’s decisive strike carried extra significance: it was the Norwegian’s 300th career goal in top-flight club football. The goal came after new signing Enzo Fernández, making his City debut, played a key role in the buildup before Antoine Semenyo delivered the cross that Haaland converted.
Despite City’s dominance of possession, the champions were unable to turn their control into a comfortable scoreline. Coventry, back in the Premier League for the first time since 2001, showed considerable resilience and created opportunities of their own in the second half. Gianluigi Donnarumma was forced into important saves as Frank Lampard’s side pushed for an equaliser.
For City manager Enzo Maresca, it was a victory rather than a performance to savour. City have now won all three of their opening league matches, collecting nine points and maintaining their place at the top of the table.
Coventry, meanwhile, can take encouragement from a display that pushed one of England’s strongest sides to the limit. They remain without a point after three games, but their performance at the Etihad suggested they will not be an easy opponent in their long-awaited return to the top flight.
