A dramatic late penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai rescued Liverpool as Newcastle were denied victory in a pulsating opening-weekend clash at St James’ Park.
The 2026/27 Premier League season delivered another dramatic encounter at St James’ Park as Newcastle United and Liverpool played out an entertaining 2-2 draw on Sunday. Both clubs began the campaign under new managers, and the match provided an early glimpse of the contrasting challenges facing Matthias Jaissle and Andoni Iraola.
Newcastle twice took the lead, but Liverpool twice responded, with Szoboszlai converting a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time to rescue a point for the visitors.
The match also carried an emotional significance beyond the football. Newcastle and Liverpool supporters paid tribute to Kevin Keegan, the former England star and manager who died in July aged 75. Willock restores Newcastle’s lead
The equaliser did not break Newcastle’s momentum. Just two minutes later, Joe Willock restored the home side’s advantage, giving the Magpies a 2-1 lead and putting Liverpool under renewed pressure.
Liverpool responded by increasing their attacking intensity. The visitors finished the game with 61% possession and 27 shots compared with Newcastle’s 13, demonstrating their sustained pressure despite repeatedly falling behind.

Szoboszlai saves Liverpool

Szoboszlai stepped forward and calmly converted in the 99th minute, rescuing Liverpool’s point and leaving Newcastle devastated after coming so close to a famous opening-day victory.
Two new managers, plenty of promise
The result was difficult for Newcastle to accept, but Jaissle can take encouragement from the performance. His team competed aggressively against one of the league’s strongest sides and twice recovered from Liverpool’s equaliser.
For Iraola, the late equaliser will provide relief. His Liverpool team showed resilience and attacking quality, but the new manager will know that conceding twice after taking control of possession is an issue that needs attention.
Liverpool’s expected goals figure of 2.73 compared with Newcastle’s 1.43 also suggests that the visitors created the better quality of chances overall.
The performance of Szoboszlai was particularly important. Beyond scoring the decisive penalty, he provided composure when Liverpool needed it most and emerged as one of the defining figures of an extraordinary finale.
A promising beginning
Neither team will consider a draw the perfect result. Newcastle will feel they let victory slip away, while Liverpool will believe their dominance should have produced three points.
Yet the match offered plenty of encouragement for both new managers. Newcastle demonstrated that they can compete with elite opposition, while Liverpool showed the resilience required to avoid defeat when the game appeared to be slipping away.
