Spain’s newly crowned FIFA World Cup champions were given a heroes’ welcome in Madrid on Monday as an estimated two million jubilant supporters lined the capital’s streets to celebrate the country’s second men’s World Cup triumph.
Victory Parade Caps a Tournament to Remember
Less than 24 hours after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final in New Jersey, Luis de la Fuente’s squad returned home to scenes of national euphoria, with fans dressed in Spain’s red and gold colours packing major roads and the iconic Cibeles Square for a day-long celebration.
The celebrations began shortly after the team landed at Madrid-Barajas Airport, where they were greeted before making official visits to King Felipe VI at the Zarzuela Palace and later to Prime Minister Pedro SΓ‘nchez at the Moncloa Palace.
King Felipe congratulated the squad for inspiring the nation through their determination and quality, while SΓ‘nchez praised the team’s attractive style of football and hailed the victory as a defining moment for Spanish sport.
The highlight of the day came during an open-top bus parade through Madrid’s city centre, where local authorities estimated close to two million people turned out to witness their champions.
The bus, emblazoned with the slogan “Kings of the World” and bearing two stars representing Spain’s World Cup titles in 2010 and 2026, slowly made its way through packed streets as players waved, danced, sang and held aloft the famous FIFA World Cup trophy.
Many players embraced the festive atmosphere, with some shirtless under the scorching summer sun while others toasted supporters with drinks. Forward Borja Iglesias doubled as the team’s DJ, providing music throughout the parade, while teammates danced alongside fans chanting their names.
Spain’s Second World Cup Title Sparks Nationwide Celebrations
Thousands had gathered hours before the team’s arrival at Cibeles Square, Madrid’s traditional venue for sporting celebrations, enduring temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius for a glimpse of the world champions.
Once on stage, each member of the squad was introduced individually to music of their choice, with the players wearing commemorative “We are champions” shirts before captain Rodri once again lifted the World Cup trophy to deafening cheers. Popular Spanish singers Aitana and Ana Mena also entertained the crowd during the festivities.
Coach Luis de la Fuente thanked supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the tournament, describing the triumph as a reward for years of hard work and unity.
“We’re proud to represent Spain and to bring this trophy home,” he said as the celebrations reached their climax.
Spain secured the title after edging defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal to deliver La Roja their first World Cup crown since South Africa 2010.
The victory capped an outstanding tournament in which Spain impressed with their possession-based football, defensive solidity and attacking flair, reinforcing their status among the world’s elite football nations.
The success also marked a historic milestone for Spanish football, making Spain the first country to simultaneously hold both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup titles following the women’s triumph in 2023.
