Kenya Revenue Authority swears in Adan Mohamed as Commissioner-General

Adan Mohamed takes over at the Kenya Revenue Authority.

Adan Abdulla Mohamed has officially been sworn in as the new Commissioner-General of the Kenya Revenue Authority, taking over the leadership of the tax agency for a three-year term as the government intensifies efforts to boost domestic revenue collection amid mounting economic pressure.

Mohamed took the oath of office at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, May 20, just days after he was appointed to the position by John Mbadi, the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury. His appointment was published in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated May 18, with the notice confirming that the appointment took effect on May 18, 2026.

According to the gazette notice, the appointment was made under Section 11(1) of the Kenya Revenue Authority Act for a period of three years.

Mohamed succeeds Humphrey Wattanga, who left the role in April 2026 after he was appointed by William Ruto as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Australia.

Meanwhile, Mohamed assumes office at a critical time when the government is under pressure to increase revenue collection amid tightening fiscal conditions and rising economic demands.

He brings extensive experience in banking, economic policy, and public administration. Previously, he served as CEO of Barclays Kenya and later as Managing Director for Barclays East and West Africa. In addition, he worked as Chief Administrative Officer for Barclays Africa, where he oversaw operations across ten countries.

In government service, Mohamed also held the position of Cabinet Secretary for Industrialisation and Trade before later heading the East African Community and regional development docket.
