On a remarkable afternoon at the Amex Stadium on 19 September 2026, Brighton & Hove Albion produced one of the most emphatic performances of the early Premier League season, defeating defending champions Arsenal 3–0 and bringing the Gunners’ perfect start to an abrupt end. The result was particularly striking because Arsenal had won their opening four league matches and seven games in all competitions.
For Brighton, the victory was more than three points. It was a performance built on aggressive pressing, quick transitions and clinical finishing and it arrived as the club celebrated its 125th anniversary. The Seagulls wore a special blue kit inspired by the club’s early history, making the occasion even more memorable.
Brighton seize control from the start
Arsenal arrived on the south coast with confidence, but Brighton immediately made it clear that this would not be a comfortable afternoon.
Fabian Hürzeler’s team pressed Arsenal high up the pitch, repeatedly disrupting the visitors’ attempts to build from the back. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was forced into an early save from teenage forward Charalampos Kostoulas, while Brighton continued to create pressure through Yasin Ayari and their energetic midfield.

Kostoulas doubles the advantage
Charalampos Kostoulas, the 19-year-old forward signed for £30 million last summer, received the ball around 25 yards from goal. Rather than hesitate, he fired towards the far corner with a precise strike that gave Raya little chance.
The timing could hardly have been worse for Arsenal. Instead of entering the dressing room with the possibility of changing the game at 1–0, Arteta’s side found themselves two goals behind.
Kostoulas’s contribution was particularly significant because his pressing had helped establish Brighton’s dominance from the opening minutes. His goal was the reward for an energetic individual performance that continually troubled Arsenal’s defence.
Arsenal fail to respond after the interval
A two-goal deficit might normally have prompted an immediate Arsenal reaction.
Instead, Brighton struck again.
In the 57th minute, Groß delivered a corner from the left. Chema Andrés, making his first Premier League start, rose at the back post and headed the ball home to make it 3–0. The goal came from an area in which Arsenal are normally regarded as particularly strong, making the concession even more damaging.

Arsenal did create a late opportunity when Kai Havertz found himself in a promising position, but Bart Verbruggen denied him in a one-on-one situation. Brighton, meanwhile, continued to threaten a fourth, with Arsenal goalkeeper Raya preventing the scoreline from becoming even heavier.
The scoreline suggested overwhelming superiority, although the underlying statistics were somewhat more nuanced.
Brighton had approximately 40% possession but registered 17 shots, while Arsenal had 11. Opta recorded Brighton with 1.33 expected goals compared with Arsenal’s 1.58, illustrating that the hosts’ finishing particularly from distance was exceptionally effective. Brighton also created four Opta-defined big chances to Arsenal’s two.
The important difference was therefore not simply possession or volume of chances. Brighton repeatedly forced Arsenal into uncomfortable situations and punished defensive mistakes, while Arsenal failed to turn their possession into the kind of sustained attacking pressure expected from the champions.
A significant defeat for the champions
For Arsenal, the defeat represented their first loss of the campaign and their heaviest Premier League defeat in three years. Remarkably, their previous 3–0 league defeat had also come against Brighton, in May 2023.
Arteta made little attempt to disguise his disappointment afterwards. Reuters reported that the Arsenal manager said there were no excuses for the performance, while Sky Sports reported his criticism that his players had failed to “respect the game.”
The defeat also ended Arsenal’s 100% league record. They remained on 12 points after five matches, while Brighton moved to 10 points at that stage of the season.
Opta noted that Brighton had now defeated the reigning Premier League champions at home for a third consecutive season. They had previously beaten Manchester City in 2024–25 and Liverpool in 2025–26.
The victory also continued an extraordinary scoring start. Brighton had become the Premier League’s highest-scoring side, with 16 goals in their first five matches.

Arsenal struggled to cope with Brighton’s pressure, conceded twice from outside the box and then allowed a set-piece goal shortly after half-time. Their inability to impose their normal rhythm meant that Brighton were able to dictate the character of the match for long periods.
