Malone Lam Crypto Theft: Shocking $245 Million RICO Case Ends in Guilty Plea

Malone Lam Crypto Theft

A 22-year-old Singaporean national, Malone Lam, has pleaded guilty in a United States federal court to a RICO conspiracy linked to an international cryptocurrency theft operation that prosecutors say stole and laundered more than US$245 million, equivalent to more than KSh 31.7 billion.

The guilty plea marks a major development in a case that has become one of the most significant cryptocurrency theft prosecutions in the United States.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Lam pleaded guilty to one count of participating in a racketeering conspiracy before U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors say the criminal enterprise began no later than October 2023 and continued until at least May 2025.

The group allegedly used social engineering techniques to target people with large cryptocurrency holdings. Members posed as representatives of trusted technology companies and attempted to convince victims that their accounts had security problems.

The operation also involved occasional home break-ins, according to court documents.

Once the criminals obtained information that could provide access to cryptocurrency wallets, the funds could be transferred away from their owners.

The DOJ said Lam played a central role in organizing the operation, identifying potential victims and coordinating different participants involved in the conspiracy.

How the Crypto Operation Targeted Victims

The group allegedly relied heavily on impersonation and deception.

In some cases, conspirators posed as customer-service representatives from companies such as Google and Apple, according to reports on the case. They attempted to persuade cryptocurrency holders to provide sensitive account information.

The operation also involved other participants who allegedly handled different parts of the scheme.

According to prosecutors, Lam coordinated callers, hackers, money launderers and other members of the enterprise.

The case demonstrates how cryptocurrency theft can involve a network of people performing different roles rather than a single individual acting alone.

More Than KSh 31.7 Billion in Cryptocurrency

The scale of the alleged theft has attracted international attention.

The U.S. government says the enterprise stole and laundered cryptocurrency valued at more than US$245 million.

One of the largest incidents involved more than 4,100 Bitcoin taken from a Washington, D.C., victim in 2024. The cryptocurrency was worth more than US$230 million at the time of that theft.

The stolen funds were subsequently moved through various channels in an effort to conceal their origins.

Authorities say the money was eventually converted into assets and experiences associated with an extravagant lifestyle.

Lavish Spending After the Alleged Theft

Prosecutors say members of the group spent the stolen cryptocurrency on luxury items and experiences.

The alleged spending included private jet rentals, luxury homes, designer clothing, expensive watches, security personnel and exotic vehicles.

The Justice Department said some of the watches were valued between US$100,000 and more than US$500,000, while exotic cars purchased or acquired by members of the enterprise ranged from about US$100,000 to US$3.8 million.

The group also allegedly spent enormous amounts at nightclubs.

According to prosecutors, spending on nightclub services reached as much as US$500,000 in a single evening.

The lavish lifestyle eventually became part of the investigation as authorities traced the movement of the stolen funds.

Malone Lam’s Role in the Enterprise

Lam was known by several online aliases, including β€œAnne Hathaway,” β€œ$$$” and β€œKing Greavy.”

The Justice Department described him as the ringleader of the international cybercrime enterprise.

Prosecutors said he helped identify wealthy cryptocurrency holders who could become targets and organized the different roles within the operation.

The conspiracy reportedly involved people based in several U.S. states as well as individuals abroad.

The group allegedly developed connections through online gaming platforms before expanding into a sophisticated criminal enterprise targeting cryptocurrency holders.

18 Defendants Charged in the Case

Lam is not the only person facing charges in the case.

The prosecution involves 18 defendants, with Lam becoming the 11th person to plead guilty.

The guilty pleas have strengthened the government’s case against the wider network and shed more light on how the operation allegedly functioned.

Authorities have described the case as an important example of how traditional fraud techniques can be combined with cryptocurrency and online technology.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Lam was arrested in the United States in September 2024, shortly after the major cryptocurrency theft that prosecutors have linked to him and his alleged associates.

He remained in custody as the case proceeded through the federal court system.

His guilty plea now means that the case will move toward sentencing.

Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has scheduled a status hearing for December 8, 2026, when further details concerning the next stage of the proceedings are expected.

Lam faces a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison for the RICO conspiracy charge.

A Major Warning for Cryptocurrency Holders

The case has also highlighted the growing risks surrounding cryptocurrency security.

The alleged operation did not rely solely on sophisticated computer hacking. Instead, prosecutors say the criminals used deception and impersonation to persuade victims to provide information that could ultimately give them access to cryptocurrency.

That makes the case significant beyond the enormous amount of money involved.

It demonstrates how criminals can combine social engineering, online networks and cryptocurrency laundering to target wealthy individuals.

For U.S. prosecutors, the guilty plea represents another major step in dismantling an international operation accused of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars.

As Lam awaits the next stage of his case, the December hearing will provide further direction on sentencing and other legal matters.

For now, the Malone Lam crypto theft case stands as one of the largest cryptocurrency racketeering prosecutions in the United States, involving more than US$245 million in allegedly stolen and laundered cryptocurrency and a network that prosecutors say operated across multiple locations and countries.
