Court detains four suspects as DCI expands investigation into Dr. Victoria Mutiso’s murder.
The investigation into the fatal shooting of renowned Kenyan clinical psychologist Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso has taken a major turn after detectives arrested two more suspects, bringing the total number of people in custody to four as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intensifies its probe.
The latest suspectsβadvocate Angela Mulwa and Nelson Masigaβwere arrested over motor vehicles that investigators believe could be linked to the murder. Their arrests come days after Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son Chris Mulwa were detained in connection with the high-profile case.
Court Orders Prime Suspects Held for 21 Days
A Nairobi court has ordered Rose Mbithe Mulwa and Chris Mulwa to remain in police custody for 21 days, allowing detectives more time to complete investigations.
The court ruled that investigators had presented sufficient grounds for continued detention, citing concerns that releasing the suspects could interfere with witnesses and compromise the investigation. The DCI had initially sought 30 days.
It is important to note that no murder charges have yet been filed, and all suspects remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
New Arrests Linked to Vehicle Investigation
In separate proceedings at the Mavoko Law Courts, advocate Angela Mulwa and Nelson Masiga were remanded as the DCI sought additional time to investigate several motor vehicles believed to be connected to the murder.
Detectives told the court they are tracing the ownership, movement and possible use of the vehicles before and after Dr. Mutiso’s killing. One of the vehicles allegedly reported missing was recovered during the investigation, while several others remain unaccounted for.
Detectives Investigating Earlier Threats
Court documents reveal that investigators are also examining threats Dr. Mutiso reportedly received weeks before her death.
According to affidavits filed in court, she reported an incident on July 7, 2026, in which two men riding a motorcycle allegedly threatened her near Junction Mall along Ngong Road. Detectives are investigating whether that incident is connected to the fatal shooting.
Property Dispute Among Lines of Inquiry
Investigators are also examining whether a long-running family property dispute may have any connection to the murder.
Court filings indicate that detectives are reviewing complaints involving alleged property destruction, missing vehicles and other disputes involving members of the extended family. However, the DCI has not announced a confirmed motive, stressing that all lines of inquiry remain active.
How the Attack Happened
Dr. Victoria Mutiso was fatally shot on July 29, 2026, while travelling in a taxi through Nairobi’s Upper Hill area after gunmen intercepted the vehicle and opened fire.
She was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. A post-mortem examination found she died from multiple gunshot wounds and severe bleeding.
Who Was Dr. Victoria Mutiso?
Dr. Mutiso was one of Kenya’s leading clinical psychologists and mental health researchers. She served as Head of Research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation (AMHRTF) and dedicated her career to improving mental healthcare through research, policy development and community programmes.
She specialized in child and adolescent mental health, substance abuse, homelessness and community-based mental healthcare. Her work earned widespread respect across Kenya’s healthcare and academic sectors.
Investigation Continues
The DCI says forensic analysis, witness interviews and digital evidence examination are ongoing. Detectives have indicated that additional arrests remain possible as they continue piecing together the circumstances surrounding Dr. Mutiso’s killing.
