Southampton F.C. Edge Middlesbrough F.C. in Extra Time to Reach Championship Play-Off Final

Shea Charles’ late winner sends Saints to Wembley showdown against Hull City A.F.C.

Southampton booked their place in the Championship play-off final after defeating Middlesbrough in a dramatic extra-time clash at St Mary’s. Shea Charles scored the decisive goal in the 116th minute, sending the Saints to Wembley, where they will face Hull City on 23 May for a place in the Premier League.

The semi-final arrived under intense scrutiny after spying allegations against Southampton dominated the build-up. Nevertheless, Russell Martin’s side stayed focused and eventually overcame a determined Middlesbrough team after a fiercely contested encounter.

Following a goalless first leg, Middlesbrough struck early in the return fixture. Callum Brittain drove down the right flank and delivered a low cross into the penalty area, where Riley McGree fired a first-time shot into the bottom corner to silence the home crowd.

However, Southampton gradually regained control of the match. Ross Stewart nearly equalised with an ambitious volley before finally bringing Saints level just before half-time. Ryan Manning floated a cross to the back post, and Stewart rose highest to nod the ball over the line from close range.
Meanwhile, tensions boiled over as emotions surrounding the spying controversy spilled onto the pitch. Southampton captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis exchanged heated words with Middlesbrough defender Luke Ayling, prompting referee Andy Madley to intervene and speak with both managers.

After the restart, both teams pushed for a winner but failed to break the deadlock in normal time. As the game entered extra time, Southampton looked sharper and controlled possession for long spells while Middlesbrough began to tire.
Eventually, Saints found their breakthrough four minutes before penalties. Charles swung a dangerous ball into the box from the right wing, and the cross evaded everyone before sneaking inside the far post to spark wild celebrations inside St Mary’s.

Although Middlesbrough launched a late assault and even sent goalkeeper Sol Brynn forward for set pieces, Southampton’s defence held firm to secure their place at Wembley.

Spying allegations fail to distract Southampton as they survive tense semi-final battle at St Mary’s

The victory sends Southampton back to the national stadium two years after they previously won promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs. This season, Saints have emerged as one of the Championship’s most consistent sides, finishing strongly after a 19-match unbeaten run to secure fourth place.
In addition, Southampton reached the FA Cup semi-final earlier this year before losing to Manchester City F.C. at Wembley.

Head coach Tonda Eckert praised both the atmosphere and his players’ resilience after the match.
“The crowd was fantastic, and the atmosphere was very special,” Eckert said. “The players had to dig very deep over 120 minutes, and across both legs I think we deserved it.”
He also reminded his squad that their job remains unfinished ahead of the final against Hull City.
“We are not finished yet. The players can enjoy this result, but there is still more to do,” he added.
Eckert also praised match-winner Shea Charles for his development this season.

“He’s maturing into a senior professional in the best possible way,” the Southampton boss explained.
Meanwhile, Eckert briefly addressed the ongoing EFL investigation into the spying allegations but avoided discussing details.
“We’ve managed not to let this distract the team, but we take the matter very seriously,” he said. “Since the investigation is ongoing, there is nothing more to add right now.”

For Middlesbrough, the defeat marked a painful end to an impressive campaign. Kim Hellberg’s side started brightly and threatened throughout the contest, yet they ultimately fell short in heartbreaking fashion.
Still, Southampton now stand one win away from a return to the Premier League as they prepare for a high-stakes final against Hull City at Wembley.
