Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi injured in violent Kisumu eatery attack, treated at Aga Khan Hospital before airlift to Nairobi as leaders demand swift police action

The attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has sparked fresh concern over rising political intolerance and insecurity in public spaces, after the lawmaker was assaulted by a group of suspected hooligans at a well-known eatery in Kisumu.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred in the early evening hours when Senator Osotsi had stopped at a popular restaurant within Kisumu city for a brief meeting. What initially appeared to be a normal outing quickly turned chaotic when a group of rowdy individuals reportedly stormed the premises, targeting the senator. Witnesses say the attackers confronted him verbally before the situation escalated into physical violence, leaving the legislator injured.

Staff and patrons at the establishment were caught off guard as the commotion unfolded. Some attempted to intervene while others scrambled for safety. In the aftermath, the senator was seen being assisted out of the premises by aides and well-wishers, visibly shaken and nursing injuries believed to have been inflicted during the attack.

Crucially, CCTV footage from the eatery is said to have captured the entire sequence of events. Preliminary reports indicate that the footage shows a group of individuals approaching the senator’s table before engaging him in a heated exchange. Moments later, the situation turns violent, with the attackers allegedly pushing, hitting, and attempting to restrain him. The video is now expected to play a key role in identifying the perpetrators, as security agencies begin investigations into what many leaders are terming a targeted and premeditated assault.

Following the attack, Senator Osotsi was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu, where he received emergency medical attention. Medical personnel stabilized him and treated visible injuries, but given the nature of the assault and the need for specialized care, doctors recommended that he be transferred to Nairobi for further evaluation.

Later that night, arrangements were made for an airlift to Nairobi. The senator was flown under medical supervision and subsequently admitted to Aga Khan University Hospital, one of the country’s leading referral facilities. Upon arrival, he was received by a team of senior doctors and medical specialists who immediately conducted further assessments to determine the extent of his injuries.

Sources indicate that several political allies and close associates were present at the Nairobi hospital to receive him, including members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and fellow lawmakers. Though official communication on his condition remains limited, insiders suggest that he is in stable condition and responding well to treatment.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from leaders across the political divide. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Migori Senator Eddy Oketch were among the first to speak out, terming the incident as both shocking and unacceptable. They called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively in apprehending those responsible.

“This is a dangerous trend that must be stopped,” one of the senators stated, emphasizing that political differences should never degenerate into violence. They further urged the police to rely on available CCTV footage and eyewitness testimonies to ensure that justice is served without delay.

The incident has also reignited debate over the safety of public officials and the growing culture of intolerance in Kenya’s political environment. Analysts warn that such acts, if left unchecked, could erode democratic values and discourage leaders from engaging freely with citizens.

As investigations continue, pressure is mounting on security agencies to provide answers and hold those behind the attack accountable. For many Kenyans, the assault on Senator Osotsi is not just an isolated incident, but a troubling reflection of deeper societal and political tensions that require urgent attention.

For now, the focus remains on his recovery, even as the country watches closely to see whether justice will be delivered in a case that has captured national attention.
