Christian Eriksen Recovering Well After On-Field Collapse, Set for Hospital Discharge

Christian Eriksen is in good spirits and is expected to be discharged from hospital soon after collapsing during Denmark’s international match against Ukraine, according to Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen.

The match in Odense was halted in the 65th minute when Eriksen suddenly collapsed on the pitch and was later abandoned. The 34-year-old midfielder regained consciousness and was able to leave the field with assistance.

Boesen provided a positive update on Eriksen’s condition, saying he had spoken with the player and that he was recovering well while spending time with his family.

Eriksen has been fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) since suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s match against Finland at UEFA Euro 2020 in 2021. Doctors confirmed that the device functioned as intended during Sunday’s incident.

The ICD enabled Eriksen to return to professional football with Brentford in 2022, eight months after his cardiac arrest, before he later joined Manchester United for a three-year spell.

Speaking about his comeback in 2022, Eriksen said he had no concerns about continuing his career with the device, noting that it provided an added layer of protection should any future medical emergency occur.

Now playing for VfL Wolfsburg, Eriksen is expected to continue his recovery at home once discharged. Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins on Thursday.
