Rapper A$AP Rocky, born Rakim Mayers, has been acquitted of charges accusing him of firing a gun at his former friend, Terell Ephron, during a heated altercation in Hollywood. A Los Angeles jury delivered the not-guilty verdict on two felony assault charges, which could have resulted in a prison sentence of up to 24 years if he had been convicted. The trial, which garnered widespread media attention, saw intense courtroom exchanges, emotional testimony, and conflicting accounts about what actually transpired on the night of November 6, 2021.
Ephron, also known as A$AP Relli and a former member of the A$AP Mob collective, claimed that Mayers pulled out a gun and fired at him following an argument outside a hotel near the Hollywood Walk of Fame. According to Ephron, the rapper pointed the weapon at him, threatened to kill him, and eventually fired multiple shots, with one bullet grazing his knuckles. Prosecutors presented the case as a violent and deliberate attack, arguing that the shooting was an escalation of personal tensions between the two former friends.
Mayers, however, denied all allegations, maintaining that the supposed gun was merely a prop and that Ephron’s accusations were motivated by financial gain. The defense team suggested that Ephron, whose relationship with Mayers had deteriorated as the rapper’s career skyrocketed, fabricated the story in an attempt to extort money. They further argued that Ephron planted shell casings at the scene to frame Mayers.
The courtroom erupted with cheers and applause as the first not-guilty verdict was announced. An emotional Mayers immediately rushed toward his family and longtime partner, global pop star Rihanna, who had been a constant presence throughout the trial. Their two sons, two-year-old RZA and one-year-old Riot, were also present for the verdict. Overcome with emotion, Mayers embraced his loved ones and his legal team, expressing gratitude to the jury. “Thank God for saving my life,” he said aloud, before personally thanking the jurors.
One of the key issues in the trial was the question of whether the gun involved was a real firearm or simply a harmless prop, as Mayers’ defense claimed. While prosecutors argued that the weapon was real and capable of causing harm, no actual gun was ever recovered. Security footage captured some audio of what sounded like gunfire but did not visually confirm that Mayers fired a weapon. Additionally, Ephron’s account raised questions, as he waited two days before reporting the incident to police and presented shell casings he claimed to have retrieved himself. However, officers who initially responded to reports of gunfire in the area had found no such evidence.
The trial was filled with dramatic and tense moments, including combative testimony from Ephron, who at one point called defense attorney Joe Tacopina “annoying” in open court, prompting a reprimand from the judge. Another unusual moment occurred when a witness, A$AP Twelvyy, was asked about a photograph showing Mayers’ bedroom furniture with the letters “AWGE” emblazoned on it. Before Twelvyy could answer, Mayers interrupted the proceedings by loudly shouting, “Don’t say!” The moment, in which a defendant directly instructed a witness not to respond to a prosecutor’s question, was an extraordinary breach of courtroom decorum.
Now that he has been cleared of the charges, Mayers is looking ahead to his future. He is set to release his first solo album in nearly a decade, a highly anticipated project that will mark a new chapter in his career. Additionally, he is scheduled to co-headline Los Angeles’ Rolling Loud festival in March 2025, signaling his return to the center of the music scene. Beyond music, he is also venturing further into film, starring alongside Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s upcoming movie Highest 2 Lowest, which is set to be released in the coming months.
With his legal battle behind him, A$AP Rocky is once again focused on his career, family, and creative pursuits, stepping back into the spotlight with renewed energy and purpose.
