Tottenham held by Leeds as the relegation battle takes another twist

De Zerbi Frustrated as Spurs Miss Crucial Chance in Relegation Fight

New head coach Roberto De Zerbi cut a frustrated figure after Richarlison squandered a golden opportunity to put Tottenham Hotspur in control against Leeds United. The Brazilian forward fired over the bar after Mathys Tel had given Spurs the lead with a stunning strike.

Although a second goal would not have guaranteed victory for Spurs, it could have eased the growing tension inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, De Zerbi is already discovering that comfort rarely exists at Spurs, especially during a tense Premier League relegation battle.

Instead of extending the gap over West Ham United, Spurs allowed Leeds back into the match. Tel’s evening quickly turned sour when his reckless challenge inside the box gifted Leeds a penalty in the 74th minute, costing Spurs two valuable points.

Tel Endures Mixed Night as Leeds Punish Spurs

Earlier in the match, Tel had already shown signs of uncertainty. Under pressure inside his own penalty area, he attempted to clear the danger but instead delivered the ball perfectly to a Leeds attacker. Fortunately for Spurs, Kevin Danso made a desperate clearance to prevent embarrassment.

However, the decisive mistake arrived later when Tel attempted a bicycle kick in his own area and struck Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu in the head. The video assistant referee quickly confirmed the penalty decision while De Zerbi looked skyward in disbelief. Subsequently, Dominic Calvert-Lewin calmly converted from the spot to level the match.

Meanwhile, De Zerbi’s fiery personality emerged throughout the evening. The Italian repeatedly reacted angrily to his side’s slow play and frequently left his technical area, prompting referee Jarred Gillett to warn him before eventually issuing a yellow card late in the game.

With 13 minutes of added time increasing the tension, De Zerbi’s frustration became even more visible at the final whistle. Spurs had missed a golden opportunity to move four points clear of danger after West Ham’s controversial defeat to Arsenal.

After the game, De Zerbi admitted that pressure affected his players.

“We didn’t play a great game, but we played a good game,” he told Match of the Day.

“I think we deserved to win, but maybe the pressure of such a crucial stage of the season affected us too much. Still, I saw the right spirit and mentality from my players.”

The Spurs manager also defended Tel after his costly mistake.

“He is young and very talented. I will hug him and support him because he already feels sorry for the mistake. These things can happen to young players,” De Zerbi explained.

Kinsky Shines as Spurs Face Nervy Run-In

Despite the disappointment, goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky produced an outstanding performance to rescue a point for Spurs. Continuing his recovery from the difficult experience of being substituted early during Spurs’ Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid, Kinsky made two vital saves.

First, he brilliantly denied Joe Rodon with a superb header stop in the first half. Later, in stoppage time, he reacted sharply to push Sean Longstaff’s effort onto the crossbar and preserve a crucial draw.

Those saves could ultimately prove decisive in Spurs’ fight for Premier League survival.

Nevertheless, the battle now appears destined to continue until the final day of the season. If West Ham defeat Newcastle United, Spurs could fall back into the relegation zone before facing Chelsea on 19 May. Chelsea would undoubtedly enjoy deepening Tottenham’s struggles before their final home game against Everton.

Furthermore, Spurs must improve their poor home form. Their last league victory at home came against Brentford in December, while De Zerbi has overseen consecutive home draws against Brighton & Hove Albion and Leeds.

In a final attempt to find a winner, De Zerbi introduced James Maddison for his first appearance since suffering a serious knee injury during pre-season. Maddison looked sharp and even appealed for a penalty after a challenge from Lukas Nmecha, but the Leeds player clearly touched the ball first.

By the end, De Zerbi’s body language reflected the mood of everyone connected with Spurs. Frustration, anxiety, and uncertainty now surround a turbulent season that could still end with an unthinkable relegation to the Championship.
