Kenya Sends 12 Students to Global ICT Competition in China

Twelve outstanding Kenyan students are set to travel to China to represent the country at the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals in Shenzhen. The event, scheduled for next week, will bring together more than 2,000 students from around the world in one of the leading global technology competitions.

The Government of Kenya, in partnership with Huawei Kenya, officially flagged off the students on Tuesday. During the ceremony, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi praised the students for their achievement and encouraged them to represent the country with pride on the global stage.

In addition, Huawei Kenya representative Gavin Gao reaffirmed the company’s commitment to nurturing digital talent and strengthening ICT skills development across the country.

Merit-Based Selection and Government Support

Mudavadi emphasized that the students earned their place in the competition through hard work, talent, and dedication. “You are not there because of luck, but because of talent,” he stated.

Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector in advancing Kenya’s science, technology, and innovation agenda. He noted that such partnerships play a key role in developing future-ready skills and strengthening Kenya’s position in the global digital economy.

The 12 students, drawn from various Kenyan universities through the Huawei ICT Academy Programme, will compete in Shenzhen against top-performing peers from across the world. They will showcase their technical knowledge, creativity, and innovation at the global finals.

Building Kenya’s Digital Future Through Innovation

Meanwhile, Prof. Robert Kinyua, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, urged the students to remain ambitious and solution-driven as they prepare for the global stage.

He encouraged them to use technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship to create opportunities and help address Kenya’s unemployment challenge. “Students must be ambitious by creating jobs for people in the future and helping narrow the job gap in Kenya,” he said.

In addition, Huawei Kenya reiterated its commitment to supporting Kenya’s digital transformation through skills development, innovation programs, and strong partnerships with learning institutions and government agencies.

Through the Huawei ICT Academy and the annual Huawei ICT Competition, the company continues to equip young people with practical ICT skills and international exposure. Ultimately, the competition provides a platform for students to test their knowledge, exchange ideas globally, and showcase Kenya’s growing technological talent.
