Search for Missing Child Turns Tragic as Red Cross Rescuer Is Electrocuted

The Kenya Red Cross Society is mourning the tragic loss of aqua rescue volunteer Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila, who died while taking part in a search and rescue mission in Nairobi.

Wangila joined a team of rescuers searching for a child reportedly swept away by flash floods after heavy rains. However, tragedy struck when electricity electrocuted the volunteer during the ongoing operation.

According to the Red Cross, the team had been combing the area in an effort to locate the missing child’s body when the fatal incident occurred. The organisation later linked the tragedy to suspected illegal electricity connections in the area.

Officials warned that unsafe and poorly installed wiring continues to pose a serious danger, not only to residents but also to emergency responders who risk their lives during rescue operations.

In an emotional tribute, the Red Cross described Wangila as a dedicated volunteer whose commitment to saving lives never wavered.

“The eyes are shedding tears. The heart is heavy with grief. Our colleague Samuel Wangila has made the ultimate sacrifice,” the organisation said in a statement.

Wangila had served as an aqua rescue volunteer for more than 15 years. Over the years, he became known as an experienced and dependable rescuer who trained and mentored many fellow volunteers in water rescue operations.

His death has left colleagues and the wider humanitarian community in deep sorrow, as many remember him for his bravery and selfless service.

The Red Cross extended its heartfelt condolences to Wangila’s family, friends, and fellow volunteers, saying it remains grateful for the courage and dedication he showed while serving the community.
