Bodies of Nandi Crash Victims, Including MP Ng’eno, Arrive in Emurua Dikirr

Bodies of Nandi chopper crash victims, including MP Johanna Ng’eno, arrive in Emurua Dikirr ahead of burial.

Residents of Emurua Dikirr and leaders from across the country gathered in large numbers as the bodies of five victims of the tragic Nandi helicopter crash, including area Member of Parliament Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno, arrived in the constituency ahead of a joint memorial service.

The remains were airlifted to Emurua Dikirr Primary School, where mourners assembled to pay their last respects in a solemn requiem mass attended by family members, political leaders, clergy and hundreds of residents. The emotional ceremony marked one of the final public tributes to the six individuals who lost their lives in the devastating crash that occurred on February 28 in Mosop, Nandi County.

The tragedy claimed the lives of six people who were on board the helicopter at the time. Among them were MP Johana Ng’eno, pilot George Were, Kenya Forest Service officer Amos Kipngetich Rotich who also served as the MP’s bodyguard, photographer Nick Kosgey, teacher Robert “Carlos” Keter and Narok County protocol officer Wycliffe Kiprotich Rono.

The arrival of the bodies in Emurua Dikirr was marked by a sombre mood as residents lined up along roads leading to the venue to receive the cortege. Many carried placards and banners honouring the late MP, who had served the constituency for several terms and was widely known for his outspoken political style and close connection with the local community.

Leaders who addressed mourners during the memorial service described the crash as a devastating loss not only for Emurua Dikirr but for the entire country. They praised the victims for their service and dedication to their respective professions.

The requiem mass at Emurua Dikirr Primary School is part of a series of memorial activities organized to honour the victims. Earlier in the week, another memorial service was held in Nairobi where friends, family and national leaders gathered to remember the lives lost in the tragic accident.

Burial preparations have been underway for several days following consultations between families, local leaders and government officials to ensure a dignified send-off for the deceased.

According to the burial programme agreed upon by the families and community leaders, the late MP Johana Ng’eno will be laid to rest on Friday, March 6, during a joint burial ceremony to be held at Emurua Dikirr Primary School. After the service, the bodies will be transported to their respective homes for final interment later the same day in accordance with family traditions.

Cultural traditions are also playing a key role in the funeral arrangements. Community elders explained that an overnight vigil will be held to allow family members, friends and residents to mourn together before the burial ceremonies begin.

Meanwhile, government authorities have launched investigations into the helicopter crash as the country continues to seek answers about the circumstances surrounding the accident. Transport officials confirmed that aviation investigators are examining the wreckage and analysing flight data in order to determine the cause of the crash. A preliminary report is expected to be released within 30 days.

The bodies of the victims had earlier been moved to Nairobi for postmortem examinations and identification procedures after the crash left them severely damaged. Experts from the Kenya Medical Research Institute assisted with DNA testing to help confirm the identities of the victims and support the investigation process.

As the community prepares to bid farewell to their fallen leaders and colleagues, messages of condolence continue to pour in from across Kenya. Religious leaders have urged residents to maintain peace and unity during the mourning period and to support the bereaved families during this difficult time.

For many residents of Emurua Dikirr, the death of their MP has left a deep void. Known for his strong political voice and grassroots mobilization, Johana Ng’eno built a reputation as a leader who often spoke boldly on national issues while remaining deeply connected to his constituents.

As the memorial service concluded, mourners lit candles and offered prayers for the victims, reflecting on their lives and contributions. The ceremony served not only as a moment of grief but also as a reminder of the fragility of life and the lasting impact the six individuals had on their communities.

Thousands are expected to attend the burial ceremony on Friday as Emurua Dikirr and the nation at large prepare to give the victims a final farewell.
