EACC CEO TWALIB MBARAK ELECTED TO GLOBAL ANTI – CORRUPTION EXECUTIVE COMMITEE

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Twalib Mbarak has been elected to the executive committee of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA).

In an event held on Wednesday, January 5, Mbarak was handed the mantle to represent African states alongside other representatives from South Africa, Mauritius, Senegal and Morocco.

Mbarak will serve a tenure of three years in the committee.

“Mbarak’s nomination to the ExCo will afford Kenya the opportunity to explore informal channels for cooperation and coordination between anti-corruption authorities across the world,” read a statement from the agency upon Mbarak’s election.

The occasion also saw Simon Peh, Head of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), Hong Kong, elected as President of IAACA.

IAACA is an independent, non-political anti-corruption organization established to promote the effective implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

It also the role of IAACA to promote measures for the prevention of corruption in both the public and private sectors, and examining of comparative criminal law and procedure and best practices.

Mbarak has held an admirable track record under his 3 year leadership in EACC.

In 2020, he teamed up with the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji to donate Ksh.2 billion as part of efforts to beef up the Covid-19 emergency fund.

EACC was also involved in the audit of funds used by the national and county governments to mitigate the spread and effects of Covid-19.

Under Mbarak, EACC and Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions successfully investigated and prosecuted high profile individuals and recovered unexplained assets worth Ksh.25 billion in the last one year.
