Tottenham Hotspur climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with a crucial 2–1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, capitalizing on their rivals’ weakened lineup and their own growing momentum.
Roberto De Zerbi saw his side take control early, as Conor Gallagher opened the scoring with his first goal since joining from Atletico Madrid in January. Soon after, Tottenham tightened their grip on the game, and Richarlison doubled the lead before half-time with a powerful header.
Meanwhile, Villa manager Unai Emery rotated heavily ahead of a decisive Europa League semi-final clash with Nottingham Forest. As a result, his side lacked cohesion and struggled to cope with Tottenham’s relentless pressing. Although Emiliano Buendia pulled one back in stoppage time, Villa never truly threatened a comeback.
Importantly, Tottenham entered the match with renewed hope after West Ham United slipped to defeat against Brentford. Consequently, Spurs seized their opportunity, securing a second consecutive league win and moving one point above West Ham in the standings.
Now sitting fourth from bottom, Tottenham have taken control of their survival bid. With fixtures against Leeds United, Chelsea, and Everton remaining, they must maintain this momentum to avoid relegation for the first time since the 1977–78 season.
Notably, Tottenham ended a 15-match winless run last weekend with a narrow victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. That result marked De Zerbi’s first win since replacing interim boss Igor Tudor, who himself had stepped in after Thomas Frank was dismissed earlier in the campaign.
Despite missing several key players, including Xavi Simons, Dominic Solanke, and Cristian Romero, Tottenham responded to De Zerbi’s challenge with intensity and resilience. Rather than dwell on injuries, they executed a disciplined game plan that overwhelmed Villa from the outset.
From the first whistle, Tottenham pressed aggressively and forced Villa deep into their own half. In the 12th minute, Kevin Danso launched a long throw that Villa failed to clear effectively. Gallagher reacted quickly, controlled the loose ball, and fired a low strike past Emiliano Martínez.
Shortly afterward, João Palhinha nearly doubled the lead, rattling the post with a fierce long-range effort. Villa remained under sustained pressure, and Tottenham soon capitalized again. A precise cross found Richarlison, who rose above the defense and headed home decisively in the 25th minute.
By contrast, Villa offered little resistance and failed to register a single shot before half-time, prompting frustration from the home crowd. Although they attempted to respond after the break, their efforts lacked urgency and creativity.
Ultimately, Buendía’s late header—assisted by Matty Cash—arrived too late to alter the outcome. Tottenham had already done enough, securing a vital win that could define their season and reshape the relegation battle.
