Kericho Mass Grave Horror: 33 Bodies Exhumed as Probe Deepens

Kericho authorities uncover shocking details after initial reports of 14 bodies rise to 33, prompting intensified investigations

A grim discovery in Kericho has sent shockwaves across the country after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) exhumed 33 bodies from a suspected mass grave at Makaburini Cemetery. The bodies, authorities confirmed, include 25 infants and 8 adults—raising serious questions about how such a large number of deaths went unnoticed or unreported.

The exhumation exercise, carried out under tight security, marks a significant escalation in what had initially been reported as a much smaller case. Early reports had indicated that only 14 bodies were suspected to have been buried at the site. However, as investigations progressed, inconsistencies in burial records and growing concerns from members of the public prompted a deeper probe, ultimately leading to the shocking discovery of more than double the initially reported number.

According to investigators, the breakthrough came after whistleblowers and local residents raised concerns about unusual burial patterns at the cemetery. Reports suggested that some graves were unmarked, while others appeared to have been hastily dug and covered. These suspicions triggered the involvement of DCI detectives, who launched a forensic investigation into the site.

The 32 bodies that were exhumed from a mass grave in Makaburini in Kericho on March 24, 2026 by homicide detectives.

Sources close to the investigation indicate that the bodies are believed to have been buried over a period of time, rather than in a single incident. The high number of infant remains has particularly alarmed authorities, with early indications pointing to possible links with local health facilities, though this line of inquiry is still under active investigation.

Government pathologists who participated in the exhumation have described the process as both delicate and disturbing. Preliminary examinations suggest that many of the bodies had been buried without proper documentation or adherence to legal procedures. The government pathologist noted that postmortem examinations will be critical in determining the causes of death, identities of the deceased, and whether any criminal negligence or wrongdoing occurred.

“The condition and manner of burial raise serious red flags,” the pathologist stated, adding that forensic analysis, including DNA testing, will be conducted to help identify the victims and establish timelines. The presence of multiple infant remains has further intensified scrutiny, with investigators seeking to determine whether the deaths were natural, accidental, or potentially linked to malpractice.

Authorities have since secured the cemetery and restricted access as investigations continue. Several individuals, including cemetery attendants and local officials, are expected to be questioned as part of the probe. The government has also moved to audit burial records and procedures in the area to establish how such a situation could have occurred without detection.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents and leaders, with calls for accountability and transparency growing louder. Human rights groups have also begun to take interest in the case, urging authorities to ensure a thorough and independent investigation.

Officials from Kericho County have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to uncover the truth. They have pledged full cooperation with national investigative agencies and emphasized that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law.

As the investigation unfolds, attention now turns to the results of forensic examinations, which are expected to provide critical insights into one of the most disturbing discoveries in recent times. For many families, the hope is that the process will bring long-awaited answers—and, ultimately, justice.
