Being in the public eye comes with its fair share of challenges, and for Nairobi County’s Chief Environmental Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria, the burden of fame is not just his to bear—it extends to those closest to him, particularly his wife.
Mosiria has become a well-known figure, largely due to his vocal advocacy for a cleaner, noise-free Nairobi. His TikTok presence has earned him widespread recognition, with many praising his commitment to environmental conservation. Additionally, his contributions to the health sector, especially during his tenure as the Chief Officer of Health Facilities, have been widely acknowledged.
However, with visibility comes scrutiny. While Mosiria has grown accustomed to criticism and even online bullying from disgruntled netizens, his biggest concern is when these attacks spill over to his family, particularly his wife.
In an exclusive interview, he shared his frustration over the negative comments directed not just at him but at his loved ones, pleading with critics to spare his wife from unnecessary distress and allow him to focus on his work.
“I can handle negative comments, but some of them go too far,” he said. “People post things like, ‘This one won’t make it to next year,’ and that scares my wife. Please, let her have peace. She lives in constant worry because she sees these messages, and it’s not fair to her. One day, some of these people will be in my position, and I hope they understand what it feels like when your family becomes collateral damage to public scrutiny.”
Despite the relentless online attacks, Mosiria has developed a thick skin over time. While negativity can be draining, he has found solace in reminding himself that public criticism often comes with the territory of meaningful work.
“I always tell my wife—if no one is talking about you, then you’re probably not doing anything important. Whether it’s praise or criticism, it means people are noticing your efforts. Sometimes, we have to make tough, unpopular decisions, but in the end, the results speak for themselves,” he explained.
Mosiria’s passion for his work is evident, and he remains undeterred by detractors. He believes that leadership often involves making difficult choices, ones that may not always be well received by the public.
Beyond his professional life, Mosiria holds his wife in the highest regard. Married for nearly a decade, he credits her unwavering support for much of his personal and professional success.
“Marriage is a beautiful thing. It teaches responsibility and gives life meaning,“ he shared with a warm smile.
He further revealed that his upbringing played a crucial role in shaping his values, particularly when it comes to relationships and family life.
“My father taught me so much—how to handle conflict, how to lead, and most importantly, how to respect women. He led by example in how he treated his three wives, all of whom I consider my mothers,“ he reflected.
To his wife, he had nothing but heartfelt appreciation and gratitude.
“I love you deeply. Without you, I wouldn’t have the joy of being called a husband or a father. You have made me a better man by taking care of me and our children, ensuring I am well-fed, well-dressed, and, above all, truly loved. Thank you for standing by me all these years, through the ups and downs, the challenges and triumphs.”
He went on to express his hopes for their future, sharing his dream of having a large family.
“I pray for your good health and that, if it’s God’s will, we can fulfill our dream of having a big family—just like my father, who had 21 children. That kind of legacy is something I admire and hope to build with you.”
Despite the negativity that comes with being in the public eye, Mosiria remains committed to his work and his family. He understands that leadership requires resilience and that public opinion will always be divided. However, his focus remains on making a positive impact.
He hopes that with time, people will learn to separate professional criticism from personal attacks and allow public figures like himself to carry out their duties without undue harassment.
“At the end of the day, I serve the people, and I will continue to do so to the best of my ability. I just hope that in doing my job, my family can be left out of the unnecessary noise,” he concluded.
