Comedian Eric Omondi Allegedly Arrested at JKIA, Stop Order Blocks Travel
Renowned Kenyan stand-up comedian Eric Omondi has reportedly been arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). According to the comedian, authorities informed him of a Stop Order against him, though the reason remains unclear.
Taking to social media, Eric shared his experience:
“I have been arrested at JKIA just before I boarded a flight to Dar es Salaam. As a Brand Ambassador for Skyward, we were launching the INAUGURAL Dar es Salaam flight. Upon handing over my passport, the immigration officers informed me that there is a Stop Order and that I cannot travel and I have to be detained.”
Eric’s followers took to social media, voicing a mix of outrage and humor:
Eric Omondi has faced similar run-ins with the law in the past, with notable arrests including:
Omondi was detained for leading a demonstration highlighting the high cost of living in Kenya. Along with other activists, he protested the rising prices of food and basic commodities. He was arrested for allegedly disrupting public order and later released.
The comedian gained attention after staging a dramatic stunt in Nairobi wearing only underwear. The act aimed to spotlight the challenges faced by entertainers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Authorities arrested him for indecent exposure but released him after public outcry.
In 2019, Omondi was arrested after posting a viral video mocking then-President Uhuru Kenyatta. The video, considered offensive by authorities, led to charges of creating disrespectful content. He was released on bail.
While details of his latest arrest remain murky, Eric Omondi’s detainment has reignited conversations about freedom of expression, the role of public figures, and government accountability in Kenya.
