“U.S. Urges Accountability on Abductions in Phone Call Between Secretary Blinken and President Ruto”

U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with President William Ruto in November to discuss key issues impacting both nations. One prominent topic was the need for accountability within Kenyan security agencies following reports of violent crackdowns and abductions during the June-August protests.

Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of continued engagement with the Kenyan public, particularly youth and civil society, to build trust and reinforce civic participation. “The Secretary also reiterated the need for full accountability for security forces reportedly involved in protest violence and abductions,” stated Spokesperson Matthew Miller.

The discussion also highlighted Kenya’s influential role in global peacekeeping, especially in the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, for which Blinken expressed deep appreciation. Regional security matters were addressed, including the Tumaini Peace Initiative and peace efforts in South Sudan, with Blinken urging South Sudanese leaders to fully commit to Nairobi-hosted peace talks to promote sustainable stability.

Their conversation extended to Sudan, where both parties agreed on the importance of expanding humanitarian access, halting ongoing conflicts, and establishing pathways for restoring civilian governance. These shared goals underscore the strong U.S.-Kenya partnership in promoting regional peace and stability.

Secretary Blinken’s conversation with President Ruto further reinforced the enduring bond between the U.S. and Kenya, underscoring the U.S.’s support for Kenya’s democratic development and peace-building leadership on the global stage.
