Baltasar Ebang Engonga, Director General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), has long been recognized for his role in the country’s anti-corruption efforts. However, a recent scandal involving explicit videos has cast a shadow over his career and brought his actions into public scrutiny.
Engonga, born in 1970, pursued an education in economics and finance at the University of Malabo. As the son of Baltasar Engonga Edjoo, the president of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), he was well-positioned within influential circles in Equatorial Guinea.
In his leadership role at ANIF, Engonga was responsible for overseeing financial investigations and implementing measures to fight corruption. His role was central to promoting transparency within government structures. However, in November 2024, his reputation was marred by scandal when authorities reportedly discovered over 400 explicit videos as part of a broader investigation into his conduct.
The videos, allegedly filmed with consent, are said to show Engonga with various women, including high-profile individuals such as the President’s sister and the spouses of other officials. Locations reportedly included his office, raising concerns about ethics in public office. Following the leak, the videos gained widespread attention, sparking public outrage and calls for action.
Vice President Teodoro Nguema responded decisively, condemning the behavior and warning that such actions would result in severe disciplinary measures. “Immediate suspension of officials who have engaged in inappropriate conduct in government offices will be enforced,” he announced. “We will take firm steps against actions that undermine public trust and ethics.”
Engonga, who is married with six children, now faces intense scrutiny not only for his professional missteps but also for potential health risks associated with his actions. The scandal has deeply impacted both his personal and professional life, highlighting issues of accountability and integrity among government officials in Equatorial Guinea.
The ongoing investigation continues to unfold, with potential implications for the country’s broader political landscape and public service standards. Engonga’s situation serves as a high-profile example of the ethical challenges and consequences of misconduct among public officials.
